Podiatry

Podiatry is a branch of medicine devoted to the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle and lower leg.

Podiatrists who are certified in foot and ankle surgery are specifically trained to diagnose and perform complex surgical treatments of the foot and ankle. They are an integral part of the health care team and currently treat the majority of foot related medical issues in the United States.

Each ABPS board certified podiatric foot and ankle surgeon has a professional doctoral degree. This degree requires: four years of podiatric medical school; a completed post graduate degree in podiatric medicine; and a surgical residency of three years.

Podiatrists treat a wide variety of foot, ankle, and lower extremity conditions through non-surgical and surgical approaches. Some of the more common problems a podiatrist would treat in their offices would be:

  • Bunions
  • Hammertoes
  • Heel pain (plantar fasciitis)
  • Flatfeet
  • Neuromas
  • Ingrown nails
  • Ankle sprains
  • Ulcers
  • Fractures of the foot and ankle
  • Tendonitis
  • Diabetic foot complications
