Personal Biography


Dr. James Muccio is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon who first came aboard at Tristate Orthopaedic Center in August, 2000. He graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, VA, and completed his residency in orthopaedics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He also earned a masters of science degree in Physiology & Biophysics from Georgetown University, and a bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Notre Dame. Before becoming an orthopaedic surgeon, he had a career as an aerospace engineer for 8 years, working for the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) as a Space Shuttle flight instructor and Space Station design engineer.

Dr. Muccio practices general orthopaedics including fracture care, arthroscopic, reconstructive and joint replacement surgery, but he has a special interest in shoulder injuries, sports medicine, and osteoporosis prevention & treatment. He received his sports training under Dr. William Garrett, the team physician for the womens’ national soccer team. He has authored numerous technical documents and has spoken locally and nationally on the effects of microgravity on the human body, including the potential risk for a fracture on a long-duration spaceflight mission. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Ohio Orthopaedic Society, Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati, Ohio State Medical Association, and the Aerospace Medical Association.
